Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary

Nongpoh, Meghalaya, India
Forest Overview : Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most important protected areas in Meghalaya, covering an area of approximately 29 sq. km. This sanctuary is a treasure trove of biodiversity, featuring dense tropical and sub-tropical forests. It is renowned for its rich avian populatio n, making it a top destination for birdwatchers in Northeast India. The sanctuary is home to rare species like the Clouded Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, and the Indian Bison. The terrain is a mix of rugged hills and small valleys with perennial streams flowing through them. The flora is equally impressive, with a vast variety of bamboo, ferns, and towering hardwood trees. Visitors can explore the sanctuary through guided forest treks that offer a chance to spot wildlife in their natural habitat. The silence of the forest is only broken by the calls of the Great Indian Hornbill or the rustle of leaves. Because it is less commercialized than other parks, it offers a raw and authentic wilderness experience. The sanctuary also plays a crucial role in the conservation of the Hoolock Gibbon, the only ape found in India. The Umtrew river flows near the boundary, providing a water source for the animals. It is a place of intense greenery and deep biological significance. :
