Palamu Fort

Daltonganj, Jharkhand, India
The Palamu Fort consists of two massive ruined forts—the Old Fort and the New Fort—located in the dense forests of the Palamau Tiger Reserve. These forts were the seats of power for the Chero dynasty, particularly under the legendary King Medini Ray in the 17th century. The Old Fort, built on t he plains, dates back even earlier to the Raksel dynasty but was significantly expanded by the Cheros. The New Fort sits atop a hill, offering a strategic vantage point over the surrounding jungle and the Auranga River. These structures have witnessed numerous battles against the Mughals and later the British. Despite being in ruins, the forts exude a sense of historical grandeur, with their thick stone walls and ornate gateways still standing as testaments to the region's royal past. The site is a favorite for history buffs and trekkers who enjoy exploring the intersection of man-made heritage and encroaching wilderness. The silence of the ruins, combined with the occasional sound of wild animals, creates a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere that transports visitors back to the era of the Chero warriors.
