Historical Background:: The Safa Masjid is an ancient and historically significant mosque located inside the premises of the Belagavi Fort. Its construction is generally attributed to Asad Khan Lari and was completed in 1519 AD during the period of the Bijapur Sultanate or possibly Sultan Ali Adilsh ah I. The mosque is a vital component of the fort's diverse religious complex, standing alongside Kamala Basadi (Jain Temple) and Hindu shrines, symbolizing the intermingling of cultures and religious tolerance during the medieval period. It is one of two mosques within the fort, the other being Jamia Masjid. Of the two, Safa Masjid is noted for its beautiful architecture and exquisite inscriptions, drawing more visitors. Architectural Importance:: The structure showcases an important fusion of architectural styles. Its pillars are famous for intricate inscriptions that blend Nagari (an Indian script style) and Persian scripts, reflecting the cultural synthesis of the ruling era. Although simple in form compared to the elaborate temples, its historical value and the serene atmosphere it offers are immense. The mosque's history is linked to the fort's transformation from a Ratta stronghold to a key defense point under the Bijapur rulers. The site is a protected monument, maintained to preserve its unique architectural and historical features. It provides a peaceful setting for reflection and historical study.
