Ecological Masterpiece: The Shimla Water Catchment Wildlife Sanctuary is a pristine forest reserve that stands as a testament to the symbiotic relationship between nature and urban survival. Situated on the eastern side of the Shimla ridge and bordered by Mashobra, this sanctuary is the heart of the region's water supply system. Spanning across 10.25 Square Kilometers, it is home to one of the most beautiful and well-preserved temperate coniferous forests in India. The sanctuary is unique because it was originally the private property of the Rana of Koti, later leased to the British to protect the water catchment for the growing summer capital. Today, it remains a strictly protected area where human interference is kept to an absolute minimum. The forest is a dense mix of Deodar, Pine, and Oak, providing a cool, shaded environment even in the peak of summer. It is a vital corridor for wildlife, including the elusive Indian Leopard, Rhesus Macaque, and the Himalayan Black Bear. The sanctuary is also a birder’s delight, with over 150 Species of birds recorded, including the rare Koklass Pheasant. The primary feature of the sanctuary is a 7 Km level road that leads to a historic water reservoir, offering a serene path for walking and cycling. The silence of the forest is profound, punctuated only by the rustle of leaves and the occasional call of a bird. It is a place where one can truly escape the hustle of city life and immerse themselves in the rhythm of the woods. Hydrological Significance: The sanctuary captures rainwater that is naturally filtered through the forest floor and collected in British-era tanks, providing pure water to the city.
