Things To Do
-
Hiring a Local Guide/Porter: Engaging a local guide or porter is one of the most important things to do, not only for safety on the sometimes-difficult trail but also to support the local economy of Lungnak Valley.
Acclimatization and Gear Check: Taking a full hour to organize your backpack, re-check your water supply, apply sunscreen, and perform some gentle stretches before starting the strenuous trek to the monastery.
Witnessing River Dynamics: Spending time at the Lungnak/Tsarap River bank near the base, observing the raw power of the glacier-fed river and the dramatic geological formations of the gorge mouth.
Refueling at a Tea Stall: Enjoying a hot cup of local butter tea (Gur Gur Chai) or a bowl of simple noodles at one of the rustic stalls, which often do...

Logistical and Supply Hub: It is a critical node for supplying the highly remote Phugtal gompa, where horses and mules are loaded with provisions before the trail begins. It is the last point of reliable road access.
A Symbol of Isolation's End: For trekkers arriving from Phugtal, it symbolizes the return to the motorable world and the achievement of completing one of Ladakh's most iconic and challenging pilgrimage treks. -

Focus on Trek Logistics: Structures are built to accommodate essential services for the trek: equipment storage, guide gathering points, and pack animal staging areas. They utilize local stone and mud, with very basic construction methods.
Bridge and Crossing Points: The base is often near a bridge or crossing point over the river, which is a critical piece of infrastructure for commencing the trail. These are often simple, sometimes precarious-looking, wooden or steel structures.
Minimal Dimensions: The settlement is highly scattered and minimal, consisting of just a few small buildings. The primary feature is the vast, open valley that immediately transitions into the narrow, trekking-only gorge. -
How To Reach:
By Air: Fly to Leh (IXL). The journey to the base takes 2-3 days by road from Leh via Kargil and Padum.
By Train: Nearest major station is Jammu Tawi (JAT). Road journey from here is long and complex. Better to fly to Leh. -
