Potagarh Fort
Potagarh Fort literally translates to the "buried fort" in the local language. This historical landmark stands at the mouth of the Rushikulya River where it meets the Bay of Bengal. The fort has a rich and complex history, having been occupied by the Mughals, the French, and the British at various points in time. It served as the first administrative headquarters of the Ganjam district under the British East India Company. The fort is star-shaped and is surrounded by a deep moat that was once filled with water to deter invaders. Inside the ruins, one can still find remnants of barracks, magazines, a cemetery, and administrative buildings. The proximity to the river provided a strategic maritime advantage. Today, it is an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected site, offering a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into the colonial past of the eastern coast of India.
