Raijama Ghati

Khunti, Jharkhand, India
Raijama Ghati is a breathtaking mountain pass that cuts through the rugged hills of the Arki block. Known for its hairpin bends and dramatic elevation changes, the 'Ghati' (valley/pass) offers some of the most scenic driving experiences in eastern India. The road is flanked by deep valleys on one si de and towering rock faces on the other, covered in a dense canopy of ancient trees. This area is a crucial ecological corridor, home to various species of wild flora and small fauna. As you drive through the pass, the temperature noticeably drops, and the air becomes crisp and laden with the scent of wild jasmine and moist earth. There are several designated "viewpoints" along the road where travelers can pull over to admire the vast expanse of the Khunti district's forest cover. The Ghati is particularly famous during the monsoon season when numerous seasonal waterfalls spring to life along the rock walls, and the entire valley is shrouded in a mysterious mist. It serves as a vital link between Khunti and the remote tribal villages of Arki, making it a place where one can witness the true, pulse of rural Jharkhand. The engineering of the road itself, carved into the tough terrain, is a marvel to observe.

Things To Do

  • ...
Road Tripping and Landscape Photography: The primary activity is the scenic drive or bike ride through the pass. Pulling over at safety bays for photography is a must. The valley is excellent for observing geological layers in the exposed rock faces. During monsoon, spotting seasonal waterfalls is a fun activity. Nature walks along the safer stretches of the road allow for close-up views of wild wildflowers. Birdwatching is productive in the early morning. It is a great spot for a quick tea break (if carrying a flask) while enjoying the view. Many visitors use the backdrop for cinematic videography. Learning about the local geography from forest guards can be insightful. The Ghati is also a path to the historical Dombari Buru hill, making it a cultural transit point. Watching the sunrise from the upper bends is a spiritual experience. ...
