Rajmahal Hills

Sahibganj, Jharkhand, India
The Rajmahal Hills are a significant geological formation in the Santhal Pargana division. These hills were formed from volcanic activity during the Jurassic period, specifically the Rajmahal Traps. They are famous worldwide among geologists for the presence of plant fossils that are roughly 68 to 145 million years old. The hills are inhabited by the Sauria Paharia tribe on the peaks and the Santhals in the valleys. The landscape is a mix of rugged terrain, lush green forests, and hidden waterfalls. The average elevation ranges from 200 to 300 meters, with some peaks reaching 550 meters. Historically, these hills served as a natural barrier and a strategic point for various rulers, including the Mughals and the British. The Ganga river flows around the northern and eastern base of these hills, creating a stunning visual contrast between the green mountains and the blue water. Exploring these hills feels like stepping back in time, as the tribal lifestyle remains largely untouched by modern urbanization. The hills are also the source of several seasonal streams and the famous Moti Jharna waterfall. They offer a perfect environment for trekking, nature walks, and geological research. The biodiversity here is rich, with various species of flora and fauna endemic to the region.
