Rani no Hajiro

Ahmedabad (Amdavad), Gujarat, India
Rani no Hajiro, meaning "Queen's Tomb Enclosure," is a unique and historically significant funerary complex in the heart of Old Ahmedabad. It serves as the burial ground for the female members of the Gujarat Sultanate's royal family, complementing the Badshah no Hajiro across the street, where the male members are interred. Built during the 15th century, the complex is notable for its architectural style, which blends Islamic funerary traditions with indigenous Hindu and Jain influences, particularly in its intricate stone carvings. The complex comprises several intricately carved cenotaphs (memorial monuments without bodies) of the queens and other royal women, set within an open courtyard. While the overall structure might appear less grand than the mosque or fortress, the individual cenotaphs are masterpieces of delicate stone latticework (jali) and floral motifs. The carvings often include traditional Indian designs, showcasing the rich cultural synthesis prevalent during the Sultanate period. Beyond its historical significance, Rani no Hajiro is a vibrant and bustling market today. The area around the tombs has transformed into a lively bazaar, particularly known for its traditional women's clothing, colorful fabrics, imitation jewelry, and accessories. It's a popular spot for locals to shop for festive attire and everyday wear. The juxtaposition of ancient royal tombs with the vibrant commercial activity of a modern market creates a unique urban experience. Rani no Hajiro offers visitors a chance to connect with Ahmedabad's royal past while also immersing themselves in the city's lively street culture and local commerce.
