Kothagudem, Telangana, India
Place Overview: Kinnerasani Dam / Project is a significant irrigation and hydroelectric project built across the Kinnerasani river, a major tributary of the Godavari. Inaugurated in 1966 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the dam serves as a lifeline for the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station. The reservoir created by the dam is massive, covering an area of approximately 635 Sq. Kms. and is surrounded by the verdant hills of the Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary. The sight of the vast expanse of water against the backdrop of the rugged hills is truly panoramic. It is a popular destination for school excursions and family outings due to its scenic beauty and educational value. The project has not only aided in power generation but also provided irrigation to thousands of acres of land. During the monsoon, when the floodgates are opened, the sight of the water gushing out is awe-inspiring. The dam is an engineering marvel of its time, showcasing the post-independence industrial growth of the region. The area around the reservoir has been developed into a tourist hub with parks and boating facilities. The silence of the reservoir is often broken by the calls of wild animals from the adjacent sanctuary. It is a perfect blend of human ingenuity and natural splendor. The glass rest house located here offers a 360-degree view of the water and the woods.
