Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali (an incarnation of Goddess Parvati) and is often referred to as the "Sabarimala of Women" due to the overwhelming number of female devotees it attracts. The temple is famous globally for its annual Attukal Pongala f estival, which has earned a Guinness World Record for being the single largest gathering of women for a religious activity. During this ten-day festival (usually in February-March), millions of women gather around the temple and in the surrounding streets, extending for several kilometers, to prepare 'Pongala' ? a ritualistic offering of sweet rice porridge cooked in earthen pots over open fires. This unique tradition symbolizes devotion and gratitude to the Goddess, believed to fulfill wishes and grant salvation. The temple's presiding deity, Attukal Amma, is also identified with Kannagi, the heroine of the ancient Tamil epic 'Silappathikaram', whose story is narrated through hymns during the festival. The temple's architecture is a beautiful blend of Kerala and Tamil styles, adorned with intricate sculptures of various deities, including Mahishasuramardini, Goddess Kali, Rajarajeswari, and Parvati with Lord Shiva. The Southern Gopuram particularly depicts the legend of Dakshayaga. Inside the main sanctum, there are two idols of the Goddess, one original and another enshrined in gold ornaments and gemstones. Shrines for Lord Ganesha, serpent deities, and Lord Shiva also enhance the temple's sacred ambiance. Attukal Temple stands as a powerful symbol of divine feminine power and draws devotees of all faiths, creating an atmosphere of deep spiritual fervor, particularly during its grand festival.
