The Ernakulam Shiva Temple, popularly known as Ernakulathappan Temple, is an ancient shrine situated in the heart of Ernakulam city. It is considered one of the most sacred sites in Kerala, with its history deeply intertwined with the royal family of Kochi. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, wh o is worshipped here in the Gourisankara form, facing the Arabian Sea to the west, which is a rare feature in Hindu temple traditions. Legend says that the idol was originally installed by Arjuna from the Mahabharata after his penance. The temple complex is spread across approximately 1.1 acres of land and serves as a spiritual anchor for the local population. The atmosphere inside the temple is serene, filled with the scent of sandalwood and the sound of traditional temple music. Historically, it was one of the seven royal temples under the Maharajas of Cochin and underwent major reconstruction in 1846 under the leadership of Diwan Sri Edakkunni Sankara Warrier. The presiding deity is believed to be the protector of the city, and devotees flock here to seek blessings for prosperity and peace. The temple is currently managed by the Cochin Devaswom Board, ensuring that the traditional rituals are maintained with utmost precision. Visiting this temple offers a deep insight into the cultural heritage of Central Kerala and the religious practices that have survived through centuries of urban development.
