Rushikulya River Mouth

Gopalpur, Odisha, India
The Rushikulya River Mouth is a globally recognized ecological site where the Rushikulya River merges with the Bay of Bengal. It is world-famous for being one of the largest mass nesting sites for the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles. Every year, thousands of these turtles travel from as far as the Pacific to lay their eggs on these sandy shores in a phenomenon known as 'Arribada'. The beach is a wide, pristine stretch of sand that remains largely untouched by commercial tourism. During the nesting and hatching seasons, the area is strictly monitored by the forest department to protect the fragile ecosystem. Beyond the turtles, the river mouth is a beautiful natural landscape with sand dunes, migratory birds, and local fishing communities. It offers a sense of vastness and raw natural beauty that is hard to find elsewhere on the Odisha coast.
