Samaleswari Temple
Goddess of the West: Dedicated to Goddess Samaleswari, the mother deity (Maa Samalei), she is the presiding deity (Ishta Devi) of Sambalpur and the entire Western Odisha region. She is worshipped as an incarnation of Maa Shakti, Mahalaxmi, and Mahasaraswati. The name Sambalpur itself is believed to be derived from her name. Chauhan Dynasty Connection: The temple was built in the mid-16th century CE by Balarama Deva, the first Chauhan ruler of the Sambalpur kingdom. It served as the dynasty's spiritual and cultural center, symbolizing the power and devotion of the Chauhan rulers.
