Travel Tips Of Dagshai Cantonment

Solan, Himachal Pradesh, India
Cantonment History: Dagshai is one of the oldest cantonment towns in India, established in 1847 by the East India Company. It was founded by securing land from the Maharaja of Patiala in exchange for other territories. The town is situated at an elevation of 6,087 feet and is known for its peaceful , uncommercialized environment. Unlike other hill stations, Dagshai has maintained its quiet military charm and colonial-era cleanliness. It was primarily built to house British troops and served as a strategic military base in the hills. The name Dagshai is derived from 'Daag-e-Shahi', referring to the royal mark once branded on the foreheads of criminals sent here. Modern Appeal: Today, Dagshai is famous for its prestigious schools, including the Army Public School and Dagshai Public School. The town features narrow winding roads lined with pine and deodar trees, offering spectacular views of the Chandigarh plains at night. It is a paradise for walkers and those seeking solitude amidst nature. The colonial architecture of the bungalows and the military barracks adds a vintage feel to the entire area. Tourists visit Dagshai to experience the serenity that is hard to find in more popular destinations like Kasauli. The town remains under the administration of the Cantonment Board, ensuring its heritage and environment are well-preserved. It is a perfect spot for a quiet weekend getaway where one can enjoy the crisp mountain air.

Tourism Tips

Health & Safety: The town is very safe and well-maintained. However, the roads are narrow, so drive carefully. Carry basic medicines as the nearest large hospital is in Solan. Stay on the marked trails during hikes.

Packing Essentials: Carry heavy woolens if visiting in winter. Even in summer, a light jacket is necessary. Comfortable shoes are essential for walking around the town and on the trails.

Local Etiquette: Dagshai is a military area, so follow all rules and regulations. Do not take photos of restricted military installations. Maintain the peace and cleanliness of the town.

Travel Advice: Visit on a weekday if you want complete solitude. The town can get a bit more visitors on weekends. Don't forget to try some local food in the small cafes near the school.
