Udhwa Lake Wildlife Sanctuary

Sahibganj, Jharkhand, India
Wildlife and Ecological Importance: Udhwa Lake Bird Sanctuary is the only bird sanctuary in the state of Jharkhand. It consists of two main lakes, Patauda and Berhale, which are connected to the river Ganges. The sanctuary covers an area of about 5.65 square kilometers and is a critical habitat for both resident and migratory birds. During the winter months, birds from as far as Siberia and Europe fly here to escape the extreme cold. It is a paradise for birdwatchers, who can spot species like the Pratincole, Egret, Wagtail, Plover, and Ibis. The ecosystem is a mix of wetlands, grasslands, and aquatic vegetation, providing ample food and nesting grounds. The local community is deeply involved in protecting the sanctuary, and it serves as a major ecological educational site. Visitors can take small boat rides to get closer to the bird nesting areas, provided they maintain silence. The serene atmosphere of the lakes, surrounded by the Rajmahal Hills, makes it a peaceful retreat. It is not just about birds; the sanctuary also supports a variety of fish and aquatic life. For nature lovers, the sight of thousands of birds taking flight at once is an unforgettable experience. The sanctuary is most vibrant from November to February when the migratory population is at its peak. It remains a hidden gem for wildlife enthusiasts visiting Eastern India.
