Viswema Village

Dzulekie, Nagaland, India
Viswema Village is one of the largest and most historic villages in Nagaland, inhabited by the Southern Angami tribe. It is famously known as the primary gateway to the enchanting Dzukou Valley. The village is perched on a ridge, offering a commanding view of the surrounding valleys and the NH-39 h ighway. Viswema is characterized by its traditional Naga pride, seen in its well-preserved customs and massive stone monuments. The village played a crucial role during World War II, providing shelter and support, and it remains a place of historical significance. The architecture here is a blend of traditional Naga huts and modern houses, many of which are painted in bright colors. The community is deeply involved in agriculture, particularly terrace farming, which paints the surrounding hills in various shades of green and gold throughout the year. For many travelers, Viswema is more than just a transit point; it is a place to experience the raw, authentic hospitality of the Naga people.

Massive Stone Monuments: Viswema is famous for its 'megaliths' or stone monuments erected to commemorate significant events or feasts of merit. These stones can be 10 feet high and weigh several tons. The traditional houses often feature the 'Kika' (house horns), with dimensions for a standard dwelling being 25x40 feet. The village layout is defensive, with narrow stone-paved alleys that wind between houses. The community wells and meeting places are built using massive stone slabs, reflecting the traditional Naga engineering that has survived for centuries. Modern houses often maintain the traditional high-pitched roof design to cope with the heavy rainfall.
