Weather And Best Time To Visit In Chellarkovil

Thekkady, Kerala, India
Chellarkovil is a serene and picturesque village nestled high in the Western Ghats, perched right on the border between Kerala and the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1200 meters (3937 feet) above sea level, it has earned the affectionate moniker, 'God's Own Balcony,' for the breathtaking, panoramic views it offers. Unlike the dense forest experience of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, Chellarkovil is famous for its wide, sweeping vistas. The primary attraction is the stunning view of the plains of Tamil Nadu, specifically the coconut groves and fertile farmlands of the Cumbum Valley, stretching out far below. The contrast between the lush, forested hills of Kerala and the dry, distant plains of the neighboring state is truly spectacular. The location features a dedicated viewpoint, often with a watchtower or a telescope, allowing visitors to appreciate the distant villages and agricultural patterns of the valley. Chellarkovil is also known for a beautiful waterfall that dramatically cascades down the rocky hillside. A unique feature of this waterfall is that it originates in the hills of Kerala but plunges to the valley, where its waters are used to irrigate the crops in Tamil Nadu. The waterfall is particularly impressive during and immediately after the Monsoon season (June to September) when the volume of water is at its peak. The area is managed as an eco-tourism project, involving the local community to promote sustainable tourism. It offers a peaceful retreat with opportunities for guided nature walks and trekking. The stunning views, especially at sunrise and sunset, make Chellarkovil an unmissable destination for those seeking natural beauty and quiet contemplation in the Thekkady region.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Best Season:

Winter (September to March): The extended winter season, spanning from late September to March, is considered the best time to visit. The weather is cool and dry, with clear skies, which are essential for enjoying the panoramic valley view without haze. The temperature ranges from 15°C to 25°C, making all outdoor activities, including the short treks and sitting at the viewpoint, extremely pleasant and comfortable.

Waterfall Peak Season:

Monsoon (June to August): For those whose primary interest is the waterfall, the Monsoon season is the ideal time. The heavy rains dramatically increase the water volume, making the waterfall a roaring, spectacular sight as it plunges down the rock face. The surrounding hills are at their most vibrant green. However, be aware that fog and heavy clouds can sometimes obscure the long-distance view of the plains.

Dry Season:

Summer (April to May): The summer months are warmer, with the possibility of haze, which can slightly obscure the distant view of the Tamil Nadu plains. However, it is a period of fewer crowds. The early mornings and late afternoons are still very pleasant, and a visit should be planned around these times to avoid the mid-day heat.

Ideal Part of the Day
:

Sunrise and Early Morning: The early morning, specifically around 7:00 AM, is the optimal time for a visit. This is when the famous morning mist or fog is often seen filling the entire Cumbum Valley below, and watching it slowly lift as the sun rises is a magical experience. The soft, gentle light is also perfect for photography.

Ideal Part of the Day
:

The Sunset View: The late afternoon (from 4:30 PM onwards) is the secondary peak time. The sunset from Chellarkovil is spectacular, with the sky changing colors over the vast, distant plains. This time is best for reflection and enjoying the cool mountain breeze before heading back to Kumily.
