Yaongyimchen

Longleng, Nagaland, India
Yaongyimchen Village is a global icon for community-led environmental conservation, situated in the heart of the Yingnyu Range. This village, along with its neighbors Alayong and Sanglu, has dedicated over 700 hectares of land to create a sanctuary for migratory birds and local wildlife. The most s ignificant guest to this village is the Amur Falcon, a raptor that migrates from Siberia to South Africa, stopping here annually in massive numbers. Before 2012, these birds were hunted for food, but through the visionary leadership of the Lemsachenlok organization, the villagers transformed into their fiercest protectors. The village landscape is a mix of high mountains, foothills, and lowlands along the D?thet River, creating a diverse ecosystem. The forest is a "biodiversity hotspot," containing rare species of orchids, medicinal herbs, and broadleaf evergreen trees like oak and alder. The people of Yaongyimchen are primarily Phom Nagas who have integrated modern conservation science with their traditional ecological knowledge. Visitors to the village can explore various spiritually and historically significant sites like Mokhoyung Teveli and Peyong Malong, which are steeped in local folklore. The village has received numerous national and international awards for its success in stopping hunting and restoring the local leopard and bear populations.
