Ban Ganga Tirtha

Kurukshetra, Haryana, India
The Final Rest of Pitamah Bhishma: Often referred to as Bhishma Kund, this Ban Ganga Tirtha is perhaps the most emotionally significant site in the region. It is here that Bhishma Pitamah lay on his bed of arrows for 58 days, waiting for the auspicious time (Uttarayana) to leave his body. The site f eatures a large, deep water tank (Kund) and a temple complex. The legend states that Arjuna created this spring to provide water for Bhishma. Unlike the other Ban Ganga in Dayalpur, this site is specifically where the 'Sharshaiya' incident is believed to have reached its conclusion. The temple houses a large reclining statue of Bhishma on arrows, which is a powerful visual representation of the epic. Pilgrims come here to meditate on the themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the inevitability of time. The complex is well-maintained by the Kurukshetra Development Board and features lush gardens and paved walkways. It is a site that commands respect and offers a deep sense of peace, away from the hustle of the modern city.
