Basheshwar Mahadev Temple

Kullu, Himachal Pradesh., India.
Details: The Basheshwar Mahadev Temple, also known as Visweshwara Mahadev, is one of the oldest and most architecturally significant temples in the Kullu Valley. Dating back to the 8th or 9th century, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is renowned for its exquisite stone carvings. Unlike the traditional wooden temples found in the region, this shrine is constructed entirely of stone in the Nagara style. It houses a massive 'Yoni-Lingam' which represents the union of Shiva and Parvati. The temple has survived centuries of natural disasters and remains a testament to the advanced masonry of ancient India. It is situated near the banks of the Beas River, providing a serene environment for meditation and worship. The intricate carvings on the exterior walls depict various Hindu deities including Lord Vishnu, Goddess Durga, and Lord Ganesha. It is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
