Black Taj Mahal

Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, India
The Black Taj Mahal, officially known as the Tomb of Shah Nawaz Khan, is one of the most visually striking monuments in Burhanpur. Built in the 17th century, it is the final resting place of Shah Nawaz Khan, the son of the famous Mughal general Abdul Rahim Khan-e-Khana. He was a brave soldier who d ied at the young age of 44. The monument is nicknamed the "Black Taj Mahal" not because it is a replica of the one in Agra, but because of the local black basalt stone used in its construction, which gives it a somber and majestic appearance. The tomb is situated on the banks of the Utavali River, surrounded by a well-maintained garden. It reflects the peak of provincial Mughal architecture, where local materials were used to emulate the grand imperial style. The structure is two-storied, with a large central dome and four smaller minarets at the corners. Inside, the ceiling is decorated with intricate paintings and geometric patterns that have survived the passage of time. The serene atmosphere and the historical weight of the site make it a must-visit for anyone exploring the Mughal trail in Central India.:

    Dimensions: Base area of approx 20x20 meters;

    Height approx 25 meters:

    Description: The architecture is a square-plan mausoleum with hexagonal minarets. It features a large bulbous dome typical of the Jahangir era.
