Burhanpur Black Tajmahal

Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, India:
Historical Significance: The monument is the tomb (Makbara) of Shah Nawaz Khan, the valiant son of Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khana (Mughal governor of Khandesh), who died around 1619-1620 at age 44. Nicknamed the "Black Taj Mahal" because of the black basalt stone used in its construction and its architect ural resemblance to the grand mausoleum, it predates the main Taj Mahal in Agra. The structure is set in a charbagh (four-part garden) and is believed to have served as the initial architectural inspiration for Shah Jahan's unbuilt Black Taj Mahal for himself. The monument stands as a major monument of national importance, highlighting the artistic and political importance of Burhanpur during the Mughal period under Jahangir and Shah Jahan.
