Cheraman Juma Masjid

Thrissur, Kerala, India
The Cheraman Juma Masjid holds a legendary place in history as the first mosque built in India, dating back to 629 CE. It was established by Malik Deenar at the behest of the Chera King, Cheraman Perumal, who is said to have traveled to Arabia and met the Prophet. This mosque is a living symbol of religious harmony, as it was built in the traditional Kerala architectural style, resembling a temple rather than a conventional mosque. It does not have minarets or domes in its original form. Inside, an ancient oil lamp has been burning continuously for centuries, and people of all faiths contribute oil to it. The mosque has undergone several renovations, but the inner sanctum remains preserved. It serves as a bridge between the Islamic world and the ancient culture of Kerala. A small museum on the premises showcases the history of the Muziris region. It is a must-visit for history buffs and spiritual seekers alike. The mosque is part of the Muziris Heritage Project, which aims to preserve the ancient port city's legacy.
