The day is marked by a unique Ekadashi Vilakku (lamp festival) procession and ends with an all-night program featuring traditional music and dance forms like Krishnanattam and Kathakali.

Things To Do
-
Attend the Nirmalya Darshan (4:
00 AM) Heading: The most important ritual and arguably the best thing to do is to attend the Nirmalya Darshan around 3:00 AM to 4:30 AM. This is when the deity is seen in the previous day's flower decorations and is a highly spiritual experience for devotees.
Perform Thulabharam Heading: Participate in the unique offering of Thulabharam, where a devotee is weighed against a chosen material (bananas, sugar, ghee, etc. ), which is then offered to the deity. This is a profound act of devotion. Visit the Punnathur Kotta Elephant Sanctuary Heading: Travel a short distance (4 KMS) to the Punnathur Kotta (now Anakotta or Elephant Fort) to see the vast number of temple elephants, which are a major feature of Guruvayur. Witnessing their care and training is a unique experience. Walk Around the O...

The Legend and Divinity (Bhuloka Vaikunta) Heading: The temple is famously revered as Bhuloka Vaikunta and is one of the most important shrines dedicated to Lord Krishna/Lord Vishnu. The idol's legendary origin, installed by Guru and Vayu, bestows it with immense spiritual power and makes it a must-visit in the Vaishnavate tradition.
Strict Code of Conduct and Rituals Heading: Guruvayur is globally famous for its uncompromising adherence to traditional Hindu customs, attire (men must wear a Mundu or dhoti, no shirts; women must wear Sari or long traditional attire), and a highly disciplined system of poojas and worship schedules laid down by the hereditary Tantri. This authenticity contributes to its spiritual gravity.
The Punnathur Kotta Elephant Sanctuary Heading: Although technically separate, the temple's association with the Punnathur Kotta, where the temple elephants are housed and cared for, adds to its popular fame. The daily rituals, the grand processions, and the occasional Aanayottam (elephant race) are all linked to the large number of elephants owned by the temple. -

Structure and Dimensions: The temple is built in a quadrangle with a central shrine (Sreekovil) dedicated to Lord Guruvayurappan. The inner sanctum is surrounded by the Nalambalam, a rectangular structure of columns and pathways. The temple complex includes a vast outer wall and a beautifully carved pillar of lamps known as the Deepasthambam. The outer space, known as the Chuttambalam, and the Vilakkumattam (a circular structure with a series of oil lamps) were largely destroyed in a massive fire in 1970 but were meticulously reconstructed following the original design. The Sreekovil features murals from the 17th century that survived the fire.
Kuttambalam and Deepasthambam: The Koothambalam, a dedicated space for performing temple arts, adds to the architectural heritage. The iconic Deepasthambam (Pillar of Lights) is a 7-tier bronze lamp tower standing at a height of about 24 feet. The roof of the Nalambalam and the main shrine are traditionally clad with copper sheets. The overall dimensions of the complex are contained within the high outer wall, with the entire structure facing the east. The simplicity of the structure highlights the spiritual focus on the deity rather than external ornamentation, typical of the Kerala architectural style. -
