Arattupuzha Pooram

Thrissur, Kerala, India
The Arattupuzha Pooram is the oldest temple festival in India, celebrated at the ancient Sree Sastha Temple. Legend says 108 deities once gathered here to pay homage to the presiding deity, Lord Ayyappa. Today, about 23 deities participate in this magnificent "Devamela" (conclave of gods). The fest ival is a seven-day extravaganza that transforms the quiet village into a vibrant hub of rhythm and color. It is a spiritual experience where the air is filled with the scent of incense and the sound of traditional percussion. The temple itself is believed to be over 3,000 years old, carrying a legacy that predates most modern structures. Devotees believe that visiting during the festival brings divine blessings for a lifetime. The grand assembly of caparisoned elephants is a sight that defines the cultural identity of Kerala. This temple is a testament to the deep-rooted Vedic traditions of the region.
