Dimna Lake

Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India
Dimna Lake is a beautiful, artificial reservoir located near the base of the picturesque Dalma Hills and the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. It was constructed and is maintained by Tata Steel to serve two primary purposes: to act as a main reservoir for supplying drinking water to the entire city of Jamsh edpur (or Tatanagar) and its surrounding areas, and to provide water to the steel plant. The construction of the dam and lake was an initiative started in 1940 and completed in 1944 to resolve the growing water scarcity issues faced by the rapidly expanding city. It is fed primarily by rainwater harvested from the hilly terrain. Today, beyond its industrial utility, the lake is one of the most popular recreational and picnic spots in Jamshedpur. The clear, blue water set against the backdrop of the undulating hills offers a tranquil escape, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and families to spend a quiet day away from the city's industrial hustle. The atmosphere is calm and restorative, often contrasting sharply with the city's image as the 'Steel City of India'.

The Man-Made Reservoir and Dam Structure: The lake is fundamentally an engineering marvel created to serve the industrial and civic needs of Jamshedpur. It is an artificial reservoir constructed on a tributary of the Subarnarekha River. The creation involved building a dam or barrage by closing two small gaps in the natural hilly terrain.

Dam Dimensions and Type: The entire reservoir, including the water spread, covers a significant area, estimated to be around 5. 5 square kilometers (or about 1,400 acres). The dam structure itself is a composite type, consisting of two main short sections. One section is approximately 800 feet long, and the other is about 1,200 feet long. The maximum height of the dam from its lowest level is about 83 feet. The lake's total storage capacity is immense, holding approximately 120 lakh cubic feet of water. The architecture is purely utilitarian, designed for water storage and supply, but the location at the foothills of the Dalma Range provides a stunning natural frame. The dam structure includes essential outlets with suitable valves to control the water flow to the city. There are strong railings installed along the periphery of the public viewing areas for safety.

Surrounding Landscape Integration: The lake's design thoughtfully integrates with the surrounding natural ecosystem. The Dalma Hills act as the natural catchment area, ensuring the reservoir is rain-fed. The area developed for tourists includes cemented flatbeds and benches for picnics, a parking area, and a few small facilities like food stalls and a resting lodge, all while preserving the maximum possible natural greenery.
