FAQs On Tungabhadra Dam

Vijaynagar, Karnataka, India
The Tungabhadra Dam, also known as Pampa Sagar, is a massive multipurpose dam built across the Tungabhadra river. It is a lifeline for the farmers of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, providing water for irrigation and generating hydroelectric power. The dam was completed in 1953 and is considered a ma sterpiece of post-independence engineering. Beyond its utility, it is a major tourist attraction due to its beautifully landscaped gardens, musical fountains, and a deer park. The view from the top of the hill, looking over the vast expanse of the reservoir, is breathtaking. The dam has 33 crest gates, and when they are opened during the monsoon, it creates a spectacular sight of gushing water. The reservoir itself is like a mini-sea, stretching as far as the eye can see. Visitors can take a government bus to the top of the dam for a panoramic view. The evening light and sound show is a highlight, attracting families and tourists alike. The area around the dam is lush green and provides a perfect picnic spot for locals. It serves as a great contrast to the dry, rocky landscape of the Hampi ruins located nearby. The dam also supports a rich diversity of fish and attracts migratory birds, making it an ecological haven in the region.
