Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary
Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary is a sprawling protected area covering over 51 SQ KM in East Sikkim. It is an extension of the Khangchendzonga National Park and is known for its high elevation and dense forest cover. The sanctuary is a treasure trove of biodiversity, housing species like the Red Pan da, Himalayan Black Bear, and the rare Civet Cat. The vegetation varies from tropical to temperate, with thick stands of oak, bamboo, and rhododendrons. The highest point in the sanctuary is Tinjurey, which stands at an altitude of about 7,000 feet. From this peak, visitors can get a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Himalayas and the Teesta Valley. The sanctuary is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 100 species of birds recorded here. There are several trekking trails that wind through the forest, offering a close look at the wild orchids and ferns. The area is maintained by the State Forest Department, and entry is regulated to protect the wildlife. A log house at Golitar provides basic accommodation for those who wish to stay overnight in the wilderness. The sanctuary is less crowded than other tourist spots, offering a true sense of isolation and peace.
