Gobind Sagar Lake

Una, Himachal Pradesh, India
Gobind Sagar Lake is a colossal man-made reservoir located on the river Sutlej. It was formed as a result of the construction of the world-famous Bhakra Dam in the 1960s. The lake is named after the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. Stretching over an area of approximately 170 square kilometers, it is one of the largest artificial lakes in India. The reservoir is crucial for irrigation and power generation, serving as a lifeline for Northern India. Its azure waters and the surrounding lush green hills make it a premier destination for nature lovers. The lake offers a tranquil escape from the urban rush, providing a serene environment for reflection. During different seasons, the water level fluctuates, revealing submerged ancient temples in winter. This unique phenomenon attracts historians and spiritual seekers alike. The local ecosystem is rich with various fish species and migratory birds. It is also a hub for water sports organized by the state tourism department. Visitors can enjoy a perfect blend of industrial marvel and natural beauty at this site.

Engineering Marvel and Dam Structure: The lake's architecture is intrinsically linked to the Bhakra Dam, a 226-meter-high concrete gravity dam. The dam's width at the base is nearly 190 meters and tapers at the top. The massive reservoir holds enough water to irrigate millions of acres. Submerged within are ruins of old Bilaspur, featuring stone temples that showcase 17th-century architectural styles. These structures appear only when water levels recede.
