Gorsam Chorten

Bomdila, Arunachal Pradesh, India
The Gorsam Chorten is an imposing and historically significant Buddhist stupa (chorten) located in the picturesque Zemithang valley, Tawang district, very close to the Indo-Bhutan border. Often regarded as the largest stupa in the region, second only to the Great Stupa of Boudhnath in Nepal, Gorsam Chorten is an architectural marvel and a deeply revered pilgrimage site for Buddhists, especially the Monpa tribe. Believed to have been constructed in the early 18th century by a Monpa monk, Lama Pradhar, the chorten stands majestically in a serene valley, surrounded by lush green mountains and the gentle flow of a local river. Its design is reminiscent of the Boudhnath Stupa, featuring a large white dome, a golden spire (chorten gyatsa), and a watchful pair of Buddha's eyes painted on all four sides of the square base, symbolizing omniscient awareness. The Gorsam Chorten is a vibrant center for Buddhist rituals and festivals, particularly the annual Gorsam Kora festival, celebrated in March. During this festival, thousands of devotees, including Monpas from Tawang and Bhutanese pilgrims, circumambulate the chorten, offering prayers and performing traditional dances. This event is a spectacular display of cultural unity and spiritual devotion. The remote setting of Zemithang, with its pristine environment and traditional Monpa villages, adds to the spiritual charm of the chorten. Visiting Gorsam Chorten offers a unique opportunity to witness the strong Buddhist faith of the Monpa people, appreciate exquisite religious architecture, and experience the tranquility of a sacred site in a stunning Himalayan valley. It's a testament to the deep cultural and religious ties between Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan.
