It was a crucial administrative building in the imperial complex, serving as the central location for the storage and management of the vast records of the Mughal Empire during the time Fatehpur Sikr i was the capital. This included state documents, royal decrees (firmans), land revenue records, financial accounts, and possibly details of the court's jewelry and treasury, signifying its role as the nerve center of the Mughal bureaucracy. Its strategic location, opposite Akbar's private palace (Kwabgah) and adjacent to the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), highlights the paramount importance of information and administrative control in Akbar's governance structure, ensuring that all state matters were immediately accessible to the Emperor. The building is a testament to the sophistication and meticulousness of the Mughal administrative system. Architectural Placement and Design: Constructed entirely of red sandstone and placed on a substantial raised platform, the Daftar Khana commands a prominent position within the administrative quadrant of the fort. It is a two-storey structure featuring facades on all four sides. The design is sober and functional, reflecting its serious administrative purpose, yet it still bears the distinctive Mughal touches of excellent craftsmanship. Its architecture is characterized by its balanced proportions and robust construction, necessary for a building that housed irreplaceable state documents. An internal staircase, located in the southeast room, provides access to the roof. The walls, though less ornate than the palaces, were decorated with intricate carvings, some of exquisite beauty, as noted by contemporary accounts, showcasing the Mughal tendency to beautify even functional spaces. The View from the Top: The roof of the Daftar Khana, though now often restricted or closed to visitors for preservation, historically offered one of the finest panoramic views of the entire Fatehpur Sikri city, including the private quarters, the Diwan-i-Aam courtyard, and the distant cityscape. This vantage point would have been invaluable for the Emperor's administrative staff to supervise the movements within the complex, reinforcing its role as an administrative control tower. Today, it remains an essential structure for understanding the administrative-military-palatial layout of Akbar's planned city.
