The name "Edupayalu" translates to "seven streams" in Telugu (Edu meaning seven and Payalu meaning streams). According to legend, the great King Parikshit performe d a "Sarpa Yagya" to rid himself of a curse. It is believed that the Manjeera River splits into seven distinct streams here to wash the feet of the Goddess. The temple is uniquely situated in a cave-like natural stone formation within the riverbed. During the monsoon, the water levels rise so high that they touch the base of the deity, a sight considered highly auspicious by devotees.
