History Of Hazaribagh National Park / Wildlife Sanctuary

Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, India.
The Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary is a sprawling protected area located on the undulating hills of the Chota Nagpur Plateau in Jharkhand, India. Established in 1955 (sometimes cited as 1976), it covers an area of about 184 to 186.25 square kilometers. Before India's independence, this area served as a private hunting reserve for the Raja of Ramgarh, giving it historical as well as ecological significance. The sanctuary's landscape is characterized by its mixed deciduous forest, primarily featuring the majestic Sal (Shorea robusta) trees, interspersed with steep hills, deep drainage channels, and grass meadows, all at an average altitude of around 615 meters. The sanctuary is a critical catchment area and contains several small rivers and artificial lakes formed by dams, which are vital for the wildlife. It is an important conservation site, providing a natural habitat for various fauna. Major wildlife includes the Sambar, Nilgai (Blue Bull), Chital (Spotted Deer), Kakar (Barking Deer), Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, Hyena, and numerous species of birds. While sightings are rare, the park is historically known to be home to the Tiger and Leopard. A well-maintained network of internal roads, stretching over 111 kilometers, connects the entire park, making it relatively accessible for safaris and wildlife viewing. The sanctuary is committed to eco-friendly initiatives to balance tourism with nature conservation, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts seeking to experience the wilderness of Jharkhand.
