History Of Jajmau

Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India:
Tracing the Roots of Ancient Kanpur: Jajmau is not just a place but an archaeological and historical treasure trove, widely regarded as the oldest inhabited area of Kanpur. The site, often referred to as Jajmau Tila (Mound), is an ancient excavation site located on the eastern end of Kanpur near the Ganga River and the Kanpur-Lucknow Highway. Historically, the mound is believed to be the site of the fort of the Puranic King Yayati, a figure central to the Mahabharata and ancient Indian lore, lending a mythical and deep historical resonance to the location. The ruins visible today, including the remnants of the ancient fort, offer a physical connection to a history that spans back centuries, with archaeological findings suggesting continuous human habitation from as far back as the 13th-17th centuries BC. Over the centuries, the area gained industrial prominence and is famously known today as Kanpur's major leather district, housing numerous tanneries. While the industry has brought environmental challenges, it remains the economic heart of this suburb. Despite the urban/industrial development, Jajmau is also home to historical and religious structures, including the ancient Durga Mandir, the tombs of Sufi saints like All-U-Din (or Makhdum Shah Ala-ul-Haq), and the Jinnaton ki Masjid. Exploring Jajmau is a journey through layers of history—from the mythical past of King Yayati to its medieval role as a strategic settlement, and finally, its modern identity as an industrial center. The entire site is a living testament to the evolution of Kanpur as a continuous urban center:
