History and Purpose: The Kirti Stambh, or 'Tower of Triumph/Fame,' is an iconic historical monument located near the Polo Ground in the heart of Vadodara. It was constructed in 1935 to commemorate the 60-year reign (Diamond Jubilee) of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, one of the most progressive rule rs of Baroda State. The monument was inaugurated by his successor, Maharaja Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad, in 1941. Philosophical Symbolism: The monument is not merely a tower but is steeped in deep philosophical and spiritual symbolism related to the life of Maharaja Sayajirao III. It represents the Maharaja's profound decision to renounce worldly pleasures and enter Vanprasthashram (the third stage of life, characterized by relinquishing worldly duties and adopting an advisory role). A Symbol of Departure: The monument's location and its unique crest visually symbolize this renunciation. The statue of a Lion atop the column faces East (the direction of spiritual pilgrimage/salvation) with its rear towards the Laxmi Vilas Palace, signifying the Maharaja's 'departure' from the kingdom and luxurious life for spiritual pursuits.
