History Of Kunjaban Palace

Historical Significance: Built in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya on a beautiful green hillock named Kunjaban, the palace was originally named Pushpabanta Palace (meaning Flowerful Palace). It served as one of the royal family's retreats and a guest house. A Literary Connection: The palace holds immense cultural significance as it was a place where Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore stayed during some of his visits to Tripura, highlighting the close relationship between the royal family and the poet. Post-Independence Role: After Tripura merged with India in 1949, the palace was converted into the Chief Commissioner's Bungalow and later served as the Raj Bhavan (Official Residence of the Governor) until 2018. Current Status: The official Raj Bhavan was shifted to a new building in 2018. The old palace is currently being developed as a national-level cultural museum, preserving its heritage for future generations.
