Chaturdash Devta Temple

Agartala, Tripura, India
General Overview: The Chaturdash Devta Temple is a historic Hindu shrine dedicated to fourteen deities who were the ancestral gods of the Tripuri kings. Built by King Krishna Manikya in 1761, the temple stands as a testament to the shift of the capital from Udaipur to Old Agartala. The deities are r epresented only by their heads, made of an alloy of eight metals known as Ashtadhatu. This temple is the center of the famous Kharchi Puja, an ancient festival that draws devotees from across the country. The fusion of tribal customs and Brahmanical rituals here is unique to Tripura. It is not just a place of worship but a living museum of the state's royal and spiritual history.
