Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary

Jorhat, Assam, India
The Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, originally known as Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, is a small yet incredibly significant protected area dedicated primarily to the conservation of India's only ape species, the Western Hoolock Gibbon. Nestled amidst lush green tea gardens and bordering the Brahmaputra River, this evergreen forest patch spans approximately 20.98 square kilometers, making it a vital habitat for a diverse range of primates and other wildlife. The sanctuary's unique geographical isolation, surrounded by tea plantations, has allowed it to become a crucial refuge for several endangered species. Beyond the iconic Hoolock Gibbons, the sanctuary is home to a total of seven primate species, including Stump-tailed Macaques, Northern Pig-tailed Macaques, Eastern Assamese Macaques, Rhesus Macaques, Capped Langurs, and Slow Lorises. This makes it a prime destination for primate enthusiasts and researchers. The dense canopy, dominated by Hollong trees (Dipterocarpus retusus), provides an ideal habitat for these arboreal creatures. Birdwatchers will also find the sanctuary rewarding, with a variety of avian species inhabiting its rich ecosystem. Exploring the Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary typically involves trekking through the dense forest, accompanied by local guides. The early morning hours are often the best time for spotting the gibbons, whose distinctive calls resonate through the jungle. The experience of witnessing these agile apes swinging through the trees in their natural habitat is truly unforgettable. The sanctuary serves not only as a conservation success story but also as an important educational center, highlighting the delicate balance of nature and the urgent need to protect these precious species. It offers a unique and immersive wildlife experience, distinguishing itself from larger national parks with its focus on primate conservation.
