Northbrook Gate
Colonial Heritage: The Northbrook Gate is a historic colonial monument located on the banks of the Brahmaputra river near Sukreswar Ghat. It was constructed in 1874 specifically to welcome Lord Northbrook, the then Viceroy of India, during his visit to Guwahati. The gate was the spot where the Vicer oy's ship anchored, and it served as the ceremonial entrance to the city. Often called the "Gate of Honour," it is the only surviving brick architecture from the colonial era in this part of Assam. The gate has witnessed many significant historical events, including the visit of Lord Curzon in 1900 and the storage of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes before their immersion in the river in 1948. Despite being over 150 Years old, the structure stands as a silent sentinel of the city's transition from a colonial outpost to a modern metropolis. The monument is situated within a small park, offering a peaceful view of the mighty river. It serves as a reminder of the British influence on the urban planning of Guwahati. Recent restoration efforts by the government and heritage organizations have helped preserve its structural integrity, making it a key stop for history enthusiasts exploring the riverfront of the city.
