How To Reach Ajinkyatara Fort

Brief History & Significance: Ajinkyatara Fort, built by Shilahara King Bhoja II in the 12th century, served as the fourth capital of the Maratha Empire after Rajgad, Raigad, and Jinji. It was a crucial vantage point and military base, later held by the Mughals and then reconquered by Chatrapati Sha hu Maharaj. It stands at an elevation of about 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) and offers panoramic views of the entire Satara city and the surrounding Sahyadri ranges. The fort currently hosts the city’s television transmission tower.: Current Status: The fort has remnants of the main structures, including gates, walls, water tanks, and a temple, maintained by local authorities and a popular trekking spot.: Geographical Importance: Its hilltop location made it strategically invincible, hence the name 'Ajinkyatara', meaning 'Invincible Star'. The fort is visible from almost anywhere in Satara city.: Local Legend: It is a local belief that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj stayed here for some time due to illness.:

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Pune International Airport (PNQ), approximately 115 km away. From Pune, one can hire a taxi or take a bus to Satara. :

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Satara Railway Station (STR), which is well-connected to major cities like Pune and Mumbai. From the station, the fort is about 6-7 km by road. :

By Road: Satara is well-connected by NH48 (Mumbai-Bangalore Highway). State Transport (ST) buses and private taxis are easily available from Pune (2. 5 hrs) and Mumbai (5-6 hrs) to the Satara bus stand. :

By Local Transport: From Satara city center, one can hire an auto-rickshaw or a local taxi. A narrow but motorable road leads almost to the top of the fort. Local Transport is the most convenient option for the final leg. :
