How To Reach Bhor Ghat

Karjat, Maharashtra, India
A Triumph of Engineering and History: Bhor Ghat, also known as Bor Ghat, is not a single spot but a highly significant mountain pass on the crest of the Western Ghats, historically and economically vital for connecting the Konkan coast (Mumbai side) with the Deccan Plateau (Pune side). The pass is g lobally famous for its remarkable railway incline, a colossal achievement of British engineering completed in 1863 by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR). The construction involved overcoming a steep ascent of over 1,800 feet in a short distance, necessitating the blasting of numerous tunnels and the construction of vast viaducts. The railway line, which remains operational today, includes 28 tunnels and numerous bridges. It was the site of immense labor and historical significance, tragically resulting in the loss of thousands of workers' lives. The pass also hosts the road routes (the old Mumbai-Pune Highway and the modern Mumbai-Pune Expressway), running parallel to the railway line. The breathtaking views, especially from the viewpoints overlooking the serpentine roads and the rail track, make it a natural and historical wonder.:

How to Reach

By Air: Nearest airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai (BOM) (approx. 85 km to the Khopoli/Karjat side) or Pune International Airport (PNQ) (approx. 110 km). Hire a taxi to reach the ghat section.

By Train: The Karjat Railway Station is the most convenient starting point. Take a local train towards Lonavala/Khandala and alight at stations like Palasdari or travel the entire ghat section to witness the engineering feat.

By Road: The ghat is directly on the main arterial route between Mumbai and Pune. Access is easy via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway (preferred for speed) or the old Mumbai-Pune Highway (NH4) (preferred for scenic stops and closer views of the rail line).

By Local Transport: From Karjat or Khopoli, hired taxis or private vehicles are the best option to drive the ghat and stop at viewpoints, as local public transport does not have designated tourist stops on the main highways. :
