How To Reach Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple

Pune, Maharashtra, India
The Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Mandir is one of the most revered and iconic temples in Maharashtra. It is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. The temple was founded in 1893 by Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai, a successful sweet maker, and his wife Lakshmibai, after they tragical ly lost their son to the plague epidemic. They were advised by their guru to build a Ganesha idol to overcome their grief and serve the community. The present main idol is an exquisite, beautifully adorned structure of Lord Ganesha, about 7.5 feet tall and 4 feet wide, famous for being heavily decorated with gold ornaments, including over 40 kilograms of gold used for adornment. This temple holds a special place in Indian history as it was the central hub for the initial organization of the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav (Public Ganesh Festival) by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in the late 19th century, who used the festival to unite people during the freedom movement. The temple is not just a place of worship but a massive center for social and charitable activities run by the temple trust.

How to Reach

By Air: Pune International Airport (PNQ) is about 12 KMS away. Take a taxi or cab to the temple, which is centrally located in the old city. The drive can take 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic.

By Train: Pune Junction Railway Station (PUNE) is the closest major railhead, only 2-3 KMS away. The area is highly congested, so the best option from the station is a local auto-rickshaw or an app-based cab. By Road (Inter-City) The temple is located in the Budhwar Peth area, a very busy commercial and historical core of Pune. Public and private buses from outside the city can drop you at the nearby Shivajinagar or Pune Station bus stops, from where local transport is necessary.

By Local Transport: Due to its central location, it is easily reachable by any local means. Walking from nearby attractions like Shaniwar Wada and Lal Mahal is often the easiest way to avoid traffic jams.
