It was named after Colonel Dalton, a British commissioner, but was later renamed in honor of the Chero King, Raja Medini Ray. The town has a deep historical connection to the Chero dy nasty, which ruled the region for centuries. The ruins of the Palamu Forts nearby stand as silent witnesses to the power and architectural prowess of the tribal kings. Wildlife: The town is the gateway to the Palamu Tiger Reserve and Betla National Park, some of the oldest protected areas in India. These forests are home to tigers, elephants, and leopards, making Daltonganj a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts. The region is characterized by dry deciduous forests and the North Koel River. Geography: Situated in a valley surrounded by hills, the town offers a rugged yet beautiful landscape. The North Koel River flows nearby, providing a lifeline for the local ecology and a scenic backdrop for the town. The climate is continental, with very hot summers and cold, crisp winters. Socio-Economic: The economy is primarily based on agriculture and forest produce. It is a major trading center for minor forest products like Tendu leaves and Mahua. By Road: The town is connected by NH-75 to Ranchi and Garhwa. State-run and private buses operate frequently between Daltonganj and other major towns in Jharkhand and Bihar.
