By Train: The closest major railway station is Jammu Tawi (JAT) or Udhampur (UHP), which are over 650 KMS away. This option is very impractical due to the massive distance and subsequent long, arduous road journey required to reach Leh and then Hanle. It is better to fly to Leh.
By Road: The mandatory route is by a hired taxi or a motorcycle from Leh.
The popular route is the Southern Ladakh circuit: Leh - Upshi - Chumathang - Nyoma - Loma - Hanle. The total distance is about 250 KMS, and the road quality is variable (partially good tarmac, partially extremely rough dirt tracks and water crossings). A high-clearance vehicle (4x4) is strongly advised.
By Local Transport: Public transport is severely limited. There are no regular bus services from Leh to Hanle. Visitors must arrange private transportation. Within the village, travel is primarily by foot, as distances are short, or by the same private vehicle to the observatory/monastery. The logistics require careful pre-planning.
