How To Reach Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary

Adilabad, Telangana, India
Wildlife Overview: Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary, elevated to a Tiger Reserve in 2012, is one of the most vital biodiversity hotspots in India. Spanning over 2015 square kilometers, it serves as the core catchment area for the Godavari and Kadam rivers. The sanctuary is renowned for its dense teak and b amboo forests, which provide a perfect habitat for the majestic Bengal Tiger. It is part of the central Indian tiger landscape, connecting various wildlife corridors across state borders. Apart from tigers, the sanctuary is home to Leopards, Indian Gaur, Sambar, Nilgai, and over 300 species of birds. The terrain is a mix of dry deciduous forests and vast grasslands, making it ideal for wildlife spotting. Historically, these forests were the hunting grounds of the local royalty, but today they are protected under the Project Tiger initiative. The Jannaram area serves as the gateway to the sanctuary, offering forest guesthouses and safari starts. The sanctuary plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of the Adilabad and Mancherial districts. During a safari, one can witness the "teak cathedrals" – towering trees that create a natural roof over the forest floor. It is a paradise for birdwatchers, especially during the winter months when migratory species arrive. The conservation efforts here involve local tribal communities, ensuring a sustainable relationship between man and wild. Walking through the buffer zones or taking a jeep safari offers a thrilling glimpse into the raw power of nature. It remains a must-visit for anyone looking to explore the wilder side of Telangana.

How to Reach

By Air: Hyderabad Airport is 300 KMS away, and Nagpur Airport is 280 KMS away. Both are viable options for travelers. From the airports, hiring a car or taking a bus to Jannaram is the most convenient way to reach the sanctuary.

By Train: Mancherial Railway Station is the nearest major rail link, located about 50 KMS from the sanctuary entrance at Jannaram. There are regular trains from Hyderabad and Delhi. Taxis and buses are available from the station to the reserve.

By Road: Kawal is well-connected by road to Adilabad, Nirmal, and Mancherial. If coming from Hyderabad, take the NH 44 up to Nirmal and then divert toward Jannaram. The roads through the forest areas are very scenic.

By Local Transport: Once you reach Jannaram, the forest department provides jeeps for the safari. For traveling between nearby villages, local buses and shared autos are available, but having a private vehicle is much better for exploring the sanctuary’s various zones.
