How To Reach Kothaligad

Karjat, Maharashtra, India
Historical Significance: Kothaligad Fort, also known as Peth Fort due to its proximity to Peth village, is a small but historically significant hill fort situated at an altitude of approximately 3100 feet (945 meters). It is more accurately described as a prominent watchtower or 'lighthouse' built a top a conical hill, strategically used by various powers, including the Marathas and the British, for vigilance over the surrounding Mawal area and the ancient trade routes. Its unique feature is the 'chimney-like' rock-cut staircase leading to the summit. The fort has a large cave, a small temple, and a water cistern, with carvings dating back to the 13th century. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Karjat region, making it a highly popular destination for trekkers, especially beginners, due to its relatively easy to moderate difficulty.

How to Reach

By Air: Nearest airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai (approx. 110 KMS). From Mumbai, hire a taxi to the base village or take a train to Karjat or Neral.

By Train: Take a Mumbai local train (Central Line) to Neral Junction (closer base point) or Karjat Junction. From either station, hire a shared taxi or auto-rickshaw to Ambivli or Peth village (20-30 KMS). Neral is often the preferred meeting point for trek groups.

By Road: Drive from Mumbai (approx. 100 KMS) via NH61 (Mumbai-Nashik Highway) passing through Murbad to Ambivli or Peth base village. Parking is available.

By Local Transport: Shared jeeps or tumtums operate from Neral and Karjat stations to the base villages, especially on trekking weekends.
