A Spiritual and Historical Nexus: Krishnabai Temple is an ancient and extremely important spiritual site in Mahabaleshwar, believed to be the spot where the sacred Krishna River originates. It is located close to the famous Panchganga Temple in the Old Mahabaleshwar area. While historical records in dicate a formal structure was built or renovated in 1888 under Maratha patronage, local legends trace its history back to the time of the Pandavas, suggesting centuries of worship at this spot. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and houses a sacred Shiva lingam, but its primary significance lies in the small spout, shaped like a cow’s mouth (Gaumukhi), from which a continuous stream of water flows into a stone cistern (kund). This water is believed to be the holy source of the mighty Krishna River, one of India's major waterways. The temple is built entirely of black stone and is known for its serene, meditative atmosphere and its location on a vantage point overlooking the beautiful Krishna Valley.
