How To Reach Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary

Introduction to Lengteng: The Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary is a significant protected area in eastern Mizoram, known for its beautiful alpine forest landscape and exceptional biodiversity, especially birds. Established in 1999 and declared a National Wildlife Sanctuary in 2001, it covers an area of 1 20 km2 (12,000 ha) with altitudes ranging from 400 to 2,141 m above sea level. It is home to the second highest peak in Mizoram, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Ecological Importance: The sanctuary is a critical part of the Indo-Myanmar Biodiversity hotspot, featuring a mix of tropical evergreen and sub-tropical montane forest types. Its dense vegetation includes major tree species like Quercus leucotrichophora and various flowering plants and rare orchids. The region's conservation efforts are focused on protecting its fragile high-altitude ecosystems. Rich Fauna and Avifauna: It is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and ornithologists. Notable animal species include the elusive Clouded Leopard, Tiger, Leopard, Sambar Deer, Hoolock Gibbon, and the Northern Pig-tailed Macaque. The sanctuary's primary fame, however, lies in its diverse avifauna, which includes rare birds like the Mrs. Hume's Pheasant, Blyth's Tragopan, Grey Sibia, and the iconic Himalayan Cutia. The government actively collaborates with local communities to ensure the preservation of this pristine environment, promoting sustainable eco-tourism practices for a minimal environmental impact. The remote location ensures a true wilderness experience.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Lengpui Airport (AIZ) near Aizawl, which is approximately 150-180 KMS away. From the airport, hire a pre-booked taxi or shared jeep to Saitual or directly towards the sanctuary via Ngopa.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Silchar Railway Station (SCL) in Assam, located about 250-300 KMS away. From Silchar, one must take a taxi or bus to Aizawl, and then another local transport to Saitual and further to the sanctuary area. The journey is long and involves multiple transfers.

By Road: The sanctuary is accessible by road from Saitual and the district headquarter Champhai. Hire a private taxi (Tata Sumo or equivalent) from Aizawl (150 km) or Saitual (approx. 90 km). The roads are mountainous and can be rough in sections, requiring a sturdy vehicle.

By Local Transport: Shared sumos or local buses run from Aizawl to Saitual and then towards villages like Ngopa. For the last leg into the sanctuary, a specialized local 4x4 vehicle and a local guide are mandatory, as public transport does not reach the entry point.
