How To Reach Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary

Lawngtlai, Mizoram, India
Place Details: Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most significant protected areas in southern Mizoram, spanning across the undulating hills near the international border. The sanctuary is named after the Ngengpui River which flows through its heart, providing a perennial water source for the inhabitants. It is dominated by virgin sub-tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests that have remained largely undisturbed. This sanctuary is famous for being a home to the Indian Elephant and the Tiger, although sightings are rare and require patience. The forest floor is rich in bamboo brakes and dipterocarp trees, creating a dense jungle atmosphere. It is a critical habitat for primates like the Hoolock Gibbon, whose haunting calls can be heard at dawn. The sanctuary's proximity to the Bangladesh border makes it a corridor for cross-border wildlife movement. It is managed by the Mizoram Forest Department with a focus on preserving the unique "Lushai Hill" ecosystem. The area is also a haven for herpetofauna, including rare species of toads and lizards. For nature lovers, Ngengpui offers a raw, unfiltered experience of the North-East Indian wilderness. The landscape is a mix of steep slopes and narrow valleys, providing breathtaking views at every turn. It is a place where nature still dictates the rules, far from the urban chaos of the mainland.
